Hello and welcome to the 3minute Law Blog.
I thought it would best to start with a brief introduction of who I am and the aims of this blog, and hope to convince you to stick around.
So, who am I…?
I am a recent Scots Law LLB graduate from Scotland who (alike many others) has spent the last 4/5 years trying to keep up to date with the continuous changes in society, and in the legal profession. I won’t go into detail about my skills, interests, hobbies or who I’d bring to a dinner party (I’ll save that for my CV) but alongside short posts, I am hoping to incorporate a bit of personality throughout the blog – I promise to keep the sarcasm to a minimal…
What is the purpose of this blog?
Honestly? This blog was born as a result of my own personal frustrations as a law student. Before starting Uni, I had a very basic understanding of the law. I gradually built this up over the years, but remember really wanting to expand my legal knowledge without spending hours reading pages and pages of dry content. I wanted bitesize information that would inspire me to read on – maybe even with a bit of humour attached…
Although I now have a degree (and am hopefully a bit more clued up on the law) I surprisingly still don’t have time to spend hours reading pages and pages of dry content. Who would have thought. The aim of this blog is therefore to make law more attractive, interesting and in turn, to widen access to the profession. Whether you are a school student, a retail worker, a 3rd year law student who doesn’t quite know if legal practice is for you, a law-enthusiast or a CEO, this blog is aimed at you.
Learning about law is so important, and really does impact every aspect of our lives. The contract you form when buying a Ginger Beer with a friend (my first & last Donoghue v Stevenson joke), the confusing employment relationship you form when taking on a 0 hour contract (Lets save Uber/Deliveroo discussion ’til later), the purchasing of your first property (!), or the planning that goes in to creating the perfectly tailored Will. Having an understanding of law is extremely valuable, and I hope this blog inspires you to learn something new.
The political climate in the UK is more talked about than ever (especially amongst the younger generations). More young people are taking to social media to discus or to simply have a rant about austerity, “fake news”, the minefield that is Br***t, and the #MeToo movement. The internet and social media has opened up a world where we can access all sorts of information within seconds, and I hope we can use this for good and see how law, politics and society all go hand in hand.
Learning about law doesn’t have to be intimidating, serious or scary and I hope the 3minute law blog can prove that. Lets have a chat.
